Information on the participants' diets, activities, medical histories, medicines, and other health-related characteristics was acquired by the team prior to the beginning of the research project.

Those who consumed moderate amounts of coffee or alcohol had a greater life expectancy compared to those who abstained. Those who consumed no more than two alcoholic beverages daily had an 18% lower risk of dying young. And a 10% reduction in mortality was associated with only two cups of coffee daily.

"Moderate" is the magic word, say the experts. Two cups of coffee a day is considered moderate according to the American Association for the Advancement of Science. The same logic also applies to alcoholic beverages; for example, two bottles of beer are acceptable.

There has been prior evidence linking coffee and alcohol to longer life expectancy. Previous research has also connected them to better heart health, a decreased chance of acquiring Alzheimer's or Parkinson's disease, and a slower progression of prostate cancer.
